Bulawayo

Blog 7-Bulawayo
What a fantastic accomodation we found on the recommendation of Louise Taylor. Right on the periphery of Bulawayo in the suburbs but might just as well have been a rural venue. Beautiful thickets of Masasa tress with a cluster of four thatched cottages discreetely nestled into the bush . Such a great place to stop and recuperated from a number of long days of travel. We were able to put our feet up and unwind.

We woke to  a much brighter day. We found our way to Renene's  Aunt and Uncle Hansie and Gerda Bezuidenhout who had moved from Kariba to a small unit in a protected community in Bulawayo. Gerda looks so good for her age and Hansie has managed to survive a significant heart attack and a crook heart against the doctors odds for 10 years. They have a nice little place and Gerda has made a wonderful garden as an oasis amongst the other units. They feed the birds every day so we were able to see doves and finches , some bishop birds and a number of other species feeding at their boxes and on the pavement. A short but special time with family.

We then met up with my cousin Helen who despite the odds has managed to survive with her family Husband Craig and son, Ryan through the diffcult times. We had a fantastic lunch at the Cattleman , a restaurant owned by the folks of George and Tarns daughter in law. Prroper steaks and can you believe it they were able to serve me good old Tripe and onions in a white sauce on mash.  A  treat my mom used to make when we were growing up and something I always enjoyed. It was sad we only had the short time over the meal to try and catchup about thirty years absence but all in all great to at least have the opportunity for a yarn. Helen and family were leaving at 01h00 for Mozambique with a couple of friends to go to their resort in Inhassora.

We then arranged to meet up with John and Sheree Thompson and their brood at a local shopping centre. A  nice venues with fish in a large pond surrounding some  local eateries and a grocer that boasted almost anything you would normally expect to get at a modern 1st world delicatessen. I learnt a lot about the real estate business in Zim from John and Brendan had a little Courtney attached to him like a limpet. Shereen and John have fostered a little indigenous Zimbabwe girl for the last 3 years and she happens to also be a Courtney.

We returned to Granite Lodge to put our feet up again and rest before the long trip we had to make to the Victoria Falls.
