Triangle here we come travelling past Buffalo Range where Prop and Rina ,Renene 's folks were stationed at the local airport which doubled as a forward airfield during . conflict in Rhodesia. Renene stopped to take a photo of the terminal where Rina served as a ground hostess.
The Ranch at Buffalo range seems to have been taken and there was not much of the business complex I remember. A memory of the Round Table nights spent at Buffolo Range and hosting the golf Tournament of "Follow the sun" . 36 holes each day at Chiredzi and Triangle courses. Our arrival in Triangle was an eye opener for the kids as the community and its surrounds were the most clean and green community they had come across in their journey. It was good to see the well manicured lawns and palms of the Triangle club were little different to my last visit before we left. Fantastic welcome from George and Tarns Webster who had travelled all theway up from Beitbridge and had been patiently waiting for us to arrive. It was just like old times and quite an emotional reunion. We just didn't stop talking the whole evening. We elected to have a quiet dinner rather than join the revelry at the cricket club which was just as well as it continued to pour with rain. A bit of a dampner on the festivities. Wee just managed to keep our eyes open till the witching hour and saw in the new year before collapsing in a heap after the long days travel. Wee met again for breakfast. Amazing value US $5.00 for a full monty breakfast of eggs ,bacon sausage ,tomato or$3.00 for a full plate of french toast bacon and syrup.
We said our farewells and then went to visit the Triangle hospital where Courtney was born . The nurse on duty took Renene and Courtney to the private rooms and the delivery suite where she was born. I was lucky enough to have the opportunity to caatch up with Dr Ash Morar the Chief Medical Officer who I knew when working for Hippo Valley in Chiredzi. He mention Doc Colin Saunders was still alive and well.
Ash kindly showed me around the hospital and we saw his new anaesthetic machine, the state of the art lab machines , a complete new wing dedicated to the management of HIV and aids with anti retroviral meds and a brand new digital xray facility. They have visiting surgeons(my old friend Mathew Wazara it seems ) and gynaecologists from Harare and Mutare. A community still very well served by a company which despite the difficulties still believes in some investment in the health and well being of their employees and their community.
We then set off for Masvingo via Gunde Halt through my favourite part of the country with the large granite Kopjes and balancing rocks. We managed to catch a few photos of donkey carts along the road.
As we neared Masvingo and Great Zimbabwe guess what? Yees the rain descended on us again though we were lucky to have just intermittent light rain for the period of our walk around the great enclosure and then up to the summit of the Acropolis. The rain cleared sufficient to have a good view down onto the great enclosure and also to see the lake. We hd a picnic lunch following our descent shar with a bunch of vervet monkeys tearing around helping themselves to left overs on other tables aroun. Lots of little one hanging onto mum's tummies getting a ride.
We called it a day and headed off towards Bulawayo a journey that was quite a bit longer than anticipated. By the time we arrived we felt we had broken the total of at least 100 police stops .
We arrived just at dusk through fog at Esigodini making the driving quite hazardous and following good instruction made our way to a wonderful venue called Granite Lodge. The stories will continue .
